Senior Cat Care Tips

Did you know that cats become seniors as early as age six? While Fluffy may still be a kitten at heart, and will continue to have frisky moments as she ages, her needs will change a little as she approaches her golden years. Here, a Rancho Bernardo, CA vet offers some helpful senior kitty care tips.

Giving your kitty a high-quality, nourishing diet will go a long way towards keeping her healthy. Offer Fluffy premium cat food, and choose healthy treats. Keep a close eye on your furball’s eating and drinking habits as well: a sudden increase or decrease in thirst or appetite can indicate medical problems.

Veterinary Care

We know, Fluffy hates car rides. However, coming to see us regularly is definitely in her best interests. Most cats should come in once a year, though your vet may recommend more frequent appointments as your kitty ages. At home, watch for any signs of potential medical issues. If you notice anything unusual about your cat’s appearance, appetite, or behavior, contact your vet immediately.

Senior Facilities

Older cats often find it easier to use litterboxes with low walls. You may want to replace Fluffy’s litterbox with one that has low sides. If you have multiple floors in your house, put extra litterboxes on every level, so your cat doesn’t have to use the stairs as much. You can also set out pet ramps or stairs to help your kitty reach her favorite napping spots.

Fluffy may have trouble reaching her whole body to groom herself. Brush your cat regularly to remove dust and dander from her coat.

Although it’s normal for cats to sleep even more as they age—up to 20 hours a day, in fact—don’t let Fluffy become a complete couch potato. Offer your furball plenty of toys to entertain herself with, and take time to play with her regularly. This will keep your cat active, and will also offer her beneficial mental stimulation. Plus, senior cats are super cute when they’re feeling frisky!

Purr Activation

Cats sometimes get confused and forgetful, and meow to show their distress. Just comfort Fluffy as best as you can, and make sure she feels comfortable, safe, and loved. Senior cat purrs are very precious!
